ThingTank also receives new funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency of Southern Ontario

Professor Matt Ratto and his collaboration group ThingTank Lab also received funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency of Southern Ontario’s (FedDev) Applied Research and Commercialization Initiative (ARC) for his project “Usability and Design of ecobee Accessory Products for Residential and Commercial Energy Use.” Prof. Ratto’s was one of fourteen U of T projects to be recognized by the initiative.

His project will study the relationship between environmental information and decision-making, and will provide assistance to Ecobee in their development of new visual interfaces and sensor infrastructures to help reduce energy consumption. Ratto is also working with Professor Greg Jamieson from Mechanical and Industrial Engineeering and Professor Zeb Tate from Electrical and Computer Engineering on this project. The funds will be used to support Master’s of Information student Mike Borg and MIE Master’s student Joshua Stein in carrying out usability and pilot ‘critical making’ design events to explore current conceptions of energy and Ecobee’s products.
